   I know a lot of people who are unhappy with their ISP (Internet Service Provider) – connections are often slow and unreliable, customer service is abysmal, and sometimes there are even explicit usage restrictions. Even worse, many areas are dominated by a single companies with local monopolies, so the consumer doesn’t even have a choice. Finally, there are many rural areas for which no one has even bothered to build broadband access, raising issues relating to the ‘digital divide‘.

   My idea consists of two main parts: first, a map that shows which ISP’s are providing access to which areas of the country/world; second, discussion boards for the users of a specific ISP in a specific region. These would facilitate self-organization of users who are victims of a particular location-specific policy of a particular ISP, allowing them to assert themselves to that ISP’s customer service not as single individuals, but instead as important customer groups with the power to organize a boycott or take some other action.

   (In writing this, I felt I was villifying ISP’s more than I should be. I don’t blame them for acting as they are as profit-maximizing entities, but I see it as a problem that the current arrangement discourages competition and creates a sub-optimal equilibrium. As I recall, capitalism works most efficiently when everyone has perfect information.)

3. seminar class discussion system

   a class discussion moderation system that goes like this: a screen maintains the speaker order - whoever is next on the screen after the current person finishes speaks next. people add themselves to the list by texting or twittering or whatever, it's automated. but the list is not FIFO! oh no it is most certainly not. at the beginning of every class each student gets 100 points. whenever someone texts in, they must indicate how many points they are willing to spend to speak sooner rather than later/never. the person who has placed the highest bid gets to speak next; bids are visible next to names on the list. a bid can be withdrawn at any time prior to speaking (in case the discussion changes topics). yeah, not everyone is equally smart, and i hate penalizing the smart people. but also, not everyone is equally vocal, and i hate the tyrrany of the loud even more. sure, some people will squander their points and have a good idea and never say it. but i think the filtering that goes on would improve the overall discussion.

4. iPhone drop.io app for media sharing at events

   I installed Droppler and found that it provides a pretty robust interface for interacting with the site, so this new app would not be intended to replace that. Instead, it would be focused on a relatively specific purpose: intuitive and simple real-time sharing of media at large public events. It would be useful for events such as concerts, conferences, presentations, meetups (such as NYTM), and political rallies. The new app would leverage the locations associated with drops to allow people to easily find the drops for the event at which they currently are.

   Users at an event would be able to select a drop from a list of nearby drops or create a new one (if the others were nonexistent or full), take photos and record audio clips from within the app, and automatically upload them to the chosen drop. After the event they could go to the drop.io to site upload media from other devices, to access their own media (I'm finding drop.io to be a relatively convenient way to get photos off of my device and on to my computer), and to access the media of others (this is particularly cool because the photos would be there immediately after the event ended - you wouldn't have to wait days for people to transfer them to their computers, upload them to Flickr, and tag them appropriately).

   The device-based App Store would provide a conduit for rapid adoption of the app among groups of friends, and it also has potential to introduce new people to the site. Users would not need to be familiar with drop.io to start using the app, but would still ultimately end up accessing their media through the site. In addition, event hosts could purchase premium accounts in advance to create larger 'official' drops for each concert in a band's tour or each event at a particular venue. Even $100/month would be relatively inexpensive for the event hosts but might substantially improve the post-event experience for attendees, potentially increasing brand loyalty. The app could be named event.io or concert.io (a play on concerto?), to highlight both it's purpose and relationship to drop.io.
